Spotify to finally launch in US July 14

Spotify late Wedesday sent surprise news that its US launch would take place tomorrow, July 14. It provided no further details other than to say that more details would come in the morning. US users were encouraged to mark their interest in advance.

The launch will represent one of the more anticipated for a music service in recent years. Spotify has been one of the most popular services in Europe and has been hoping for a similar reputation in the US, with leaks showing expectations for as many as 50 million users in the first year.

Its model is expected to follow the same pattern established in Europe. There, the service has a limited 10 hours of free listening every month for five listens per track. A full Premium service may cost $10 per month and would give unlimited, on demand listening both on the web and in Android and iPhone apps. An option is likely to exist for buying permanent MP3 files for typical prices.

Update: Extra details surfaced in an interview. Americans will get a wider 20 hours per month with the same five-track limit. Those who get in during the invitation period will have unlimited listening for the first six months. Full Premium access will cost $10 per month, but a $5 plan similar to its European equivalent will give access to those who only need web access.
